The challenge

The Scottish Bible Society have occupied 7 Hampton Terrace, a former church, for a considerable period and sought to modernise their staff’s working environment. The brief to Architect/Interior Designer, Michael Laird Architects was to create an open plan, rationalised workspace within an existing traditionally constructed, historic, former church in West Edinburgh.

Our solution

Light-touch was the approach necessary from Etive in this case, specifically looking to minimise structural interventions to this listed property. As ever in refurbishment-type projects, the key was building as good an understanding of the existing building structure, as early as possible. An early investment of both time and exploratory investigations will always benefit budget certainty and limit risk in the construction phase. It also aids the pre-planning and definition of service routes, limiting structural interventions which can be expensive or indeed visually intrusive. The architectural solution for this fit out has allowed the timber arched roof structure of the former church to be shown in all its glory; the client and all concerned were delighted with the results.
